Synopsis and Project Overview
Denver, 1993. The news comes on every night with somebody’s name in it, and Colorado Boulevard has become a line nobody crosses. In Park Hill, Ruby raises her grandchildren Robert and Nova. In Five Points, her estranged brother John raises Chris and Sammy. Neither family has spoken the other’s name in eighteen years. The fracture began in the 1970s, when John dreamed of revolution and Ruby dreamed of crossing the red line, and their friend Darryl was killed for telling the truth. Then came the welfare rules that pushed fathers out of the home, the gangs, the crack, and a generation of grandparents left to raise the children their children left behind. Now Robert and Chris are being drafted into a war they never chose. But the crows circling the city were never just birds. When violence brings both families to the same hospital on the same night, Nana and the ancestors of Inner Space rise to show them the land that was always theirs, the line drawn to divide them, and the bloodline they share. But one family in that hospital isn’t going home whole. Nine year old Little Jackie’s big brother was shot in a drive by, and in the lobby Nova gives her a crystal bead and tells her it has a purpose. Then the day rewinds. It’s that same morning, and Little Jackie picks up her family’s camcorder for the very first time and presses record. One family found its way back. Now we see that day through her eyes.
